Argentine Pediatric Trauma Program was initiated in 1989 as an independent organization dedicated to injury prevention, teaching, epidemiological research, morbidity surveillance, and comprehensive injury control.

In 2003 the Pediatric Injury Prevention Association (Asociación Prevención del Trauma Pediátrico-APTP) was founded in order to provide support to the pediatric trauma program activities.

Our Association is a non governmental organization (NGO) devoted to work on multiple fields of childhood injury.

The APTP has been recognized by numerous professional societies, including the Argentine Pediatric Society, Argentine Surgical Association, and the Argentine Pediatric Surgical Association.

Overall goals of the Association are to promote, develop and evaluate actions on all levels of injury prevention in children.

Particular objectives of the Association include:

  • To promote, develop and evaluate actions related to primary prevention of injury in children.
  • To decrease the effects of the disease in childhood and the subsequent impact on adults.
  • To plan, develop and evaluate information systems on injury surveillance and injury prevention to audit injury control actions.
  • To advise projects on injury prevention to NGO or GO in order to reduce incidence and severity of injuries.
  • To develop and asses projects and programs of teaching and training on trauma prevention and trauma initial care.
  • To plan, develop and evaluate research projects on pediatric trauma.
  • To promote and develop conjoint actions with national and international NGO and GO to increase programs and projects on trauma care and prevention.

Some of our activities are:

  • Argentine Pediatric Trauma Registry (APTR) was developed as a research tool, this registry is the first multicenter database for injured children in our country, and is the cornerstone of our program.
  • A collaborative trauma project with the Argentina societies of Surgery, Pediatrics and Pediatric Surgery, the Mar del Plata National University, and the National Institute of Epidemiology. This project involved 5 small cities of Argentina. Data from this project has provided the rational basis and empiric evidence applied in the design of prevention programs. For example, in one of the participant cities this program demonstrated a 50% decrease in burn injuries in children and a 60% drop in pediatric car crash fatalities. It has also proved the feasibility and success of our model that was applied further on in other cities.
  • An injury prevention project supported by VIGI+A Program, a branch the National Argentine Health Ministry to pursue an operative research in other small cities. (Project# 3012 “Feasibility scenarios for injury prevention in five small cities of Argentina”).
  • Advanced Pediatric Initial Trauma Care Courses (Cursos Atención Inicial en Trauma Pediátrico -Cursos AITP®) to provide training to physicians and nurses in the initial care of the injured child. Since 1991, more than 1.200 participants have been trained in the courses, and the educational program has been successfully exported to Spain and Brazil.  In concert with to these provider courses we have implemented public education strategies to promote trauma care and injury prevention in Argentina and other neighboring countries.
  • AITP Instructors´ Courses to capacitate those professionals who will run the Courses. 7 courses have been carried out.
  • Surgery of Trauma Courses (Situaciones de Emergencia en Trauma SET) oriented to emergencies´ surgeons.
  • Pediatric Trauma Symposa: Five international meetings were performed: 3 in Buenos Aires Argentina and 2 in Madrid Spain.
  • Virtual book on guidelines on pediatric trauma initial care. www.ptp.org.ar & www.intramed.net
  • MATRAP® A guideline based upon correlation between weights and highs to be use in initial care of pediatric trauma patients.
  • During 2007 we have signed conjoint projects on injury prevention and education in trauma care with governmental authorities of Corrientes State as well as with the School of Medicine of this province.
  • We have supported teaching programs in pediatric initial trauma care in Spain and Brazil.
